Chicago Travel Guide: 12 Things to Know Before Visiting Chicago (From a Chicago Local!)

If you have more time or aren't a fan of museums or tall buildings, here are some more fun things to do in Chicago:

It is part of the Wabash Arts Corridor, which is a short walk from Millennium Park. The Art Institute of Chicagoand other well-known tourist attractions. Bonus: Best Hotels Near Both Chicago Airports

If you have a very early or very late flight, it might be a good idea to book a hotel as close to the airport as possible! Chicago has not one but two international airports, OHare International Airport and Midway International Airport.

Next I will talk about both and I will give some hotel options for each of them:

River North Chicago's premier nightlife neighborhood

River North is Chicago's entertainment district and, in my opinion, the best place to stay for first-time visitors to Chicago. As the name suggests, this is the area north of the river and also east of the West Branch of the Chicago River. River North has the highest concentration of hotels in Chicago, and that's because there's so much to do in River North. Includes Michigan Avenue for world-class shopping, as well as some of Chicago's best nightclubs and restaurants. It's fairly compact and easy to walk around, so you may choose your hotel based on price rather than location. River North is very safe. However, with so many nightclubs, there are often problems after hours, often with drunk patrons. During the day, there isn't much to worry about in River North in terms of safety.

River North has a little bit of everything, and its location between the Loop and the Gold Coast means that everything is accessible from River North. The shops and restaurants are the highlights. If you haven't been to Eataly, it's definitely a highlight. In addition to shopping on Michigan Avenue and the Water Tower Mall, there are galleries and boutiques tucked away on side streets. The best way to see the North River is on a Chicago Architecture River Cruise.

Wrigleyville, Chicago's premier neighborhood for sports fans

As you can imagine, Wrigleyville is the neighborhood that immediately surrounds Wrigley Field. This is also part of Lakeview, a large Chicago district that also includes Boys Town. This is the first place I lived in Chicago and in the 90's there were no hotels in the area. Out of town guests had to sleep on my couch or stay away from my apartment. Today, Wrigleyville has been completely redone, including Wrigley Field itself. I had the opportunity to stay last fall.Hotel Zacarias, the new Marriott Bonvoy hotel, across from Wrigley Field. It's a great hotel and a lot of fun staying in this part of town. If you can get a room here during Cubs season, do it! Elsewhere in the neighborhood you'll find plenty of sports bars, casual eateries, and some fun shops. If you're not a sports fan, be sure to check the Cubs schedule before deciding where to stay in Wrigleyville, as the crowds can be annoying if you're not one of them.

Chicago is safe for a weekend trip

Chicago is largely a safe city, and tourists shouldn't have to worry when walking through the city center or visiting well-known attractions. However, it's always a good idea to do some research or ask the locals before venturing out of town. Chicago does experience violence and crime, but this is mostly confined to certain hot spots, like Chicago's West End and South Side. Although these areas are clearly seedy and riddled with gang violence and crime, they are a far cry from downtown Chicago. Be careful with your belongings in crowds or crowded areas, as pickpockets often frequent the most popular tourist spots in the city. At night, it's best to stick to well-lit streets and crowded areas, as robberies at night occur in dark side streets. Be sure to check the weather forecast for potential natural hazards that can occur during Chicago's particularly severe winter.

The best places to stay safe while minimizing traffic

I'm thinking of a visitChicagoArea for a long weekend as a mother and teenage son before heading off to college. We would be arriving on I-80 from the west. I'm not at all comfortable in heavy traffic, so I would happily stay in a suburban hotel and use public transportation, even though I know it will take longer. We visited FermiLabs and the Museum of Science and Industry. Suggestions for places where you can minimize the time you spend using public transportation and also feel safe with just the two of us. Since we'd probably only spend one day in the city center, the hassle of traffic isn't worth the time savings and added expense of staying further out of town.

How long is your visit? MSI is 11 kilometers south of the center. Fermi is located in Batavia, a suburb in the far west. Driving is the best option.

You know that Fermilab is in the western suburb of Batavia and MSI is on the south side of the city, about 40 miles away. Freeways in the western suburbs are also very crowded and busy.

There is literally no way to visit MSI from the western suburbs that "minimizes time spent using public transportation."

Naperville is a large city with easy subway access to downtown. Maybe you could go downtown and come to Millennium StationMichiganand Randolph St and take the Metra Electric Line to 56th Street. Google Maps can provide turn-by-turn directions for public transportation by clicking on the train icon.

Chicago Loop Chicago's main shopping district

Visit Chicago - What NOT to do when visiting Chicago

It's called The Loop because the CTA, or Chicago's public transportation system, runs through the center of the city. I mean everything south of the river and north of Roosevelt from the west branch of the river to the lake. This is primarily Chicago's central business district, so nights and weekends can be a bit quieter. However, the eastern part of the Loop is also Chicago's theater district, so there is quite a bit of nightlife and some hotels near the Chicago Theater that are worth exploring. Hotel rates in the Chicago Loop can vary widely depending on conventions and events. It is possible to get great weekend deals as most hotels cater to business travelers.

Some of the top Chicago Loop attractions include Willis Tower Buckingham Fountain, Daley Plaza, Christkindl Market, Millennium Park, Grant Park, State Street Shopping, and the Art Institute of Chicago, along with some of Chicago's best architecture. If you're coming to Chicago by train, Union Station and Ogilvy Station are in the know, and Ogilvy has the French Market with some of thebest donuts in chicago. During the weekdays, some of Chicago's best food trucks can be found near the Willis Tower. This is definitely one of the best places to stay in Chicago!
