Giro d'Italia 2023 | Phase 14 | The last kilometer

Track 14. stage
The stage begins with demanding climbs, followed by 150 kilometers of downhill and flat terrain. Once you reach the top of the Simplon pass, the route is characterized by a technical descent into Italy with several tunnels. The first part of the road from the border with Lake Maggiore is wide and flat and is more complex along the shore of the lake. The last part of the route is more difficult and passes through Sesto Calende, but still on good paved roads. Traffic calming devices are common in urban areas.

the last mile
The final stage takes place mainly in urban areas, without special obstacles. The road is straight with a few bends. The climb is slightly below the 3% mark in the last kilometer. The flat section (300 m) lies on an 8 m wide platform.

Primoz Roglič is at the beginning of another "transition phase".

The stage offers opportunities for sprinters, but also great opportunities for rest. From the beginning there is a struggle to escape. Eighteen drivers managed to escape at first, but it wasn't over as several drivers tried to cross the road. Lennard Kämna and Thymen Arensman, no. 6 and 8, are also trying to get into the front row.

The hernia starts out small, but grows quickly

Jumbo-Visma didn't want that to happen and almost closed the gap by half-time before Kämna and Arensman fell behind. The chasing eleven joined the top team on the first kilometer of Passo del Sempione. The top team now consists of 27 drivers. Mattia Bais and Mirco Maestri joined later, bringing the total number of drivers to 29.

60 kilometers from the finish line, Bettiol launched a powerful attack. Danzi, Thursday's stage winner, jumped on the Italian but the pair could not hold on. When they were caught, Rex took off. He had Aldani with him, and they were joined by Ballerini and Skugish.

The guys from Movistar took over the work in the chasing group. They were helped by Williams, who had two teammates: Oops and Clark. Sütterlin also works for Pasqualon. EOLO-Comet also has a man on top. The difference increased to about 50 seconds. On a small climb 10 miles in, Gee attacks alone.

The chasing group split up. Mayrhofer then attacked from the front, prompting a reaction from Gee. At the same time, Rex was removed from the top team. The Belgians from Intermarché-Circus-Wanty were caught by Gee and Mayrhofer, who were also joined by Bettiol and Denz. In the third group are Mollema and Armirail who are now wearing virtual pink jerseys. The gap between the main group and the top was more than 19 minutes.

Ineos extended the break by almost 20 minutes – do they want to lose the pink jersey?

The second group was lagging behind the three leaders for a long time, about 10 to 15 seconds, but in the last kilometer the gap decreased even more. Aldani started to sprint early...too early. Skujiņš and Ballerini close as the second set draws them in. Now the sprint for the larger group is announced and Denz is the fastest. Gee prevailed strongly, but was again in second place. Third was Bettiol ahead of Laurenz Rex.

Another stage win for Nico Denzo

stage winner,Nicole Dance(BORA-Hansgrohe):"I felt really good today and managed to get back to my best. We were lucky that we managed to close the gap in the last kilometer. I felt really good and when Bettiol started his sprint, I was right behind him and then I gave way." It's my best. To reach the goal. It was a very difficult day, but it ended well for me."

Geraint Thomas is now second with 1:41

pink sweater,Bruno Admiral(To groups-FDJ):"The plan this morning was more about stage wins. We talked to my teammate Rudy Molard. We thought one day the Maglia Rosa might be caught Disappointed because I didn't have a good day. It was only in my head when Geraint Thomas crossed the finish line, but it was difficult. After Thibaut Pinot's second place yesterday, it's great for the team. That's a good thing to say."
