Now that you know about weed, what else do you need to know about smoking in the Netherlands?

What is the difference between marijuana and hashish?

Before we get to the really good stuff, let's clear up some differences when it comes to the magical cannabis plant.

Marijuana and hashish might be different things on paper, but they're similar in that they're both made from cannabis and contain THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis that gets you, well, high. The difference is how they are produced and what effects they produce.

(Video) Coffee Shops in Amsterdam

Production of marijuana and hashish

For marijuana, the grower cuts the flower bulbs from the female cannabis plant and leaves them to dry. When it's completely dry, the grower removes the seeds or stems from the bulb and presto, you've got some weed.

Hashish is obtained through a different process. As the flower bulbs dry, the shiny crystals inside the bulb, commonly called pollen, are carried away by the rest of the plant.

Pollen is very potent and rich in THC and becomes hashed through various processes (depending on the crop).

The most famous hashish, Moroccan, is made with a sieve to separate the pollen from the dry bulb.

This process is repeated over and over again with more and more pressure and finer sieves, until in the end the famous hash block emerges.

The difference between a marijuana high and a hash high

The hash has a more subtle effect because it contains more CBD, one of the other main components of the cannabis plant along with THC.

While marijuana will give you more of that classic girly high, hashish will give you a milder high and is therefore preferred by people who smoke but also want to engage in some sort of vigorous activity.

An example of this activity, although somewhat silly, is cleaning. Marijuana isn't really a club drug, but given its powerful high, it's not a great cleanser motivator.

Hash is the perfect enabler for this and will give you that kick that makes cleaning so much fun.

Best Weed in Amsterdam: Indica or Sativa Weed Strains?

The indica/sativa split is probably the most familiar indicator when browsing the different types of weeds that can be found in Amsterdam's many coffeeshops.

In general, indicas are believed to provide a more relaxing body high, best suited for indoor activities, relaxation, and watching TV. Sativa, on the other hand, gives you an uplifting cerebral high, perfect for creative pursuits or more outdoor pursuits.

Amsterdam's Best Weed: A Cannabis & Coffee Shop Guide [2022] Page 1 of 0 (9)

Well, that split isn't necessarily true when it comes to effects, and it's more of a general indicator than anything else.

There may be sativas that can get you high in a way that feels like an indica and vice versa.

So it's best to try different varieties and see what works for you and your needs. It is also important to note that there is no such thing as a pure sativa or indica strain.

They are all a blend and contain a bit of both, with percentages like 60% sativa, 40% indica. Some strains are specific hybrids that even out the percentages.

Grinder and Other Pot Adventures in Amsterdam

Now that you have the weed, obviously the best thing to do is smoke it. But before you smoke the weed, you have to roll it up in a joint, which you may or may not know about. But there are some other things to consider.

First, how are you going to smoke your weed? Would you roll a joint with just marijuana? As a beginner, you should know that smoking a regular joint will make you feel very, very, perhaps irritatingly high.

A better alternative is to mix it with tobacco to keep it from getting too high. If you don't want to smoke tobacco, you can use all kinds of herbal mixtures specially made for smoking.

Second, you need a grinder. It is not a necessary tool, as you can also use your hands to grind the herb, but it will make your task much easier.

There are two types of grinders that you should be aware of. There's the basic grinder, which (more or less) only has one compartment. Just toss in the weed, grind it really well, and then sprinkle it over the joint.

Alternatively, you can get a more complex grinder with multiple compartments or levels. On the first level from above, grind the grass, on the second level, collect it, and on the last level, collect all the pollen. Yep, pollen is all that sweet THC.

If you use one of the more complicated grinders for a while, the pollen compartment will fill up and all you have to do is put some pollen on your jay to burn it off.

How to Roll a Dutch Joint

Now let's move on to what is arguably the most important aspect of smoking pot: role learning. It took many nights and failed joints to get it right, but trust me, you can do it.

(Video) Coffeeshop à Amsterdam : Conseils aux fumeurs

You need two essential ingredients. The tip of the filter and the paper itself. In Holland you can get most rolling papers, but in other European countries you can find endless rolling papers (a long roll of rolls that you can stretch to your desired length).

One king size sheet is enough to learn to roll.

Before you start, make sure the sticky side is facing you, because there's nothing worse than rolling up a joint and realizing you've turned the paper upside down.

You also need to make the tip of the filter, which is pretty easy once you know what you're doing. Mix the tobacco and weed before adding it to the joint, making sure it's evenly distributed.

Amsterdam smoking and marijuana etiquette

Like all great things in life, smoking weed is best shared with others. But as with all social activities, there are some rules you must abide by.

There are many different informal rules for smoking marijuana. Most of them have to do with how much joint a person should smoke and the direction in which it is injected.

You may have heard of the "puff puff pass", one of the most well-known rules. Another would be to swipe left, but this really depends on your group of friends, as everyone is free to choose the rules that best suit their smoking needs.

Regardless of the rules you choose to optimize your smoking experience, as a good practice, try not to hold a joint in your hand too long.

We all have that moment of smoking, rejoicing in the story we're telling, and then forgetting to tell it.

Being that person can be uncomfortable, but expecting someone to remember to pass it on is even worse, so try to be considerate and attentive to your smoking friends.

Help, I'm having a bad trip in Amsterdam!

As with any substance, bad trips can happen. The most important thing to remember is that you're feeling this way because you've just consumed a lot of marijuana.

Before you even smoke, make sure you are in a comfortable, familiar home environment with people you trust. These two elements are very important when it comes to having a good trip.

If you are new to the smoking habit, you can always get in touch with theCoffeeshop Amsterdam Information CenterFirst. They are trained professionals who can help you with your doubts.

If you decide to smoke marijuana and feel very anxious and afraid, try not to intensify this feeling any further.

Ask your friends for comfort, drink lots of water and eat some snacks. The effects should wear off after about two hours, so don't worry, you'll feel like this for a long time.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that regardless of sativa or indica considerations, weed often amplifies who you already are.

So, for example, if you are a very sociable person, smoking marijuana will increase that feeling. If you are naturally anxious and introspective, marijuana can also amplify these feelings in ways that make you even more anxious.

Before continuing to smoke, consider how marijuana makes you feel.
